Why Router Security Starts Before You Connect a Single Device

Most home routers ship with identical default usernames and passwords — credentials that are publicly listed in manufacturer manuals and well-known to anyone probing networks for easy entry points. Until you change those defaults, every device you connect sits behind a door with a key under the mat.

Access Your Router's Admin Panel

Log in with the default credentials printed on the router.

Change the Admin Username and Password

Set Your Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) and Encryption

Create a Strong Wi-Fi Password

Still in the wireless settings, set a new Wi-Fi password (sometimes called a passphrase or network key). A strong Wi-Fi password is at least 16 characters long. A random sequence of words — sometimes called a passphrase — is both easier to remember and harder to crack than a short string of symbols. Avoid using your address, family names, or anything printed on the router itself.

Update Your Router's Firmware

Look for a firmware or software update section in the admin panel — often under 'Advanced,' 'Administration,' or 'Maintenance.' If an update is available, install it now. Enable a Guest Network

Disable Remote Management

Remote management allows someone to access your router's admin panel from outside your home network over the Internet. Unless you have a specific, ongoing need for this, disable it. Look for this option under 'Remote Access,' 'Remote Management,' or 'WAN Access' in the advanced settings. Leaving it on unnecessarily widens the surface available to external threats.

Configuring your router well is not a one-time task. A few recurring habits will maintain that security over time.

Check for firmware updates periodically. Many routers offer automatic updates, but if yours does not, log into the admin panel every few months and check. Manufacturers release patches in response to newly discovered vulnerabilities, and an unpatched router is a known risk regardless of how well you configured it at setup.
